Cayman Brac: A Quick Guide

The Cayman Islands is made up of three islands, and they’re all found in the Caribbean Sea. Today, we’re focused on Cayman Brac, which is 12 miles long and roughly a mile wide. “Brac” is the Gaelic term for “bluff,” and it features a limestone ridge that runs through the center.

No Ferries Between the Grand Cayman Islands and Cayman Brac Island (Getting There)

No ferries operate between Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman, so you must travel by air. Cayman Airways offers regular flights to each Sister Island (Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac).

The Bluff

Beautiful Cayman Brac features a gentle ascent that leads you to the limestone cliffs. There is a lighthouse, and birds often circle overhead. Plus, you can enjoy the Brac Parrot Reserve, which showcases endemic fauna and flora species.

West End

In the West End of Cayman Brac, you’ll find a gas station, grocery stores, the airport, and more. It’s where most of the residents live.

You’ll also find the Cayman Islands Tourism Information Center here, along with a primary school.

Eastern Districts

If you continue east, there are plenty of “mom-and-pop” shops and local restaurants that showcase the Island’s food. Likewise, you’ll find the Cayman Brac Heritage House and a museum that focuses on the country’s past. Two primary schools are found here: Spot Bay Primary School and Creek Primary School.

Stake Bay

Stake Bay is on the north side, which is right in the middle of the Island. It’s actually the capital, and you’ll find a museum, hospital, government building, high school, and more.

Stay at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort

With plenty of accommodations, it can be hard to decide where to stay. We often recommend the Cayman Brac Beach Resort because it has modern rooms, a pool, a bar, and a restaurant. Plus, it offers valet diving services. However, you’ll also find condos to rent, the Carib Sands Beach Resort, and Le Soleil d’Or.

Things to Do on Cayman Brac

Outdoor enthusiasts can find many activities to stay occupied on this Island. In fact, Cayman Brac offers 12 marked hiking trails, Rebecca’s Cave, rock climbing, kayaking around the artificial reef, and much more. Here are a few things you shouldn’t miss:

Diving on this Island is amazing because you’ll see finger and patch reefs, drop-offs, walls, and the MV Captain Tibbetts’ wreck.

We’ve found two popular shops offering different dive packages: Brac Scuba Shack and Reef Divers (through the Cayman Brac Beach Resort).

If you’re into snorkeling, Buccaneer’s Inn is a great place to see eagle rays, reef sharks, angelfish, and much more. Radar Reef is also an excellent spot and is found in Stake Bay. There are plenty of dive sites to scour.
